The Spanish-speaking Caribbean includes some of the largest islands in the region! This area was the very first place Christopher Columbus landed when he arrived in the Americas. Spain quickly colonized these islands, building giant stone forts to protect their gold and ships from pirates. Over time, the culture became a rich blend of the indigenous Taino people, Spanish settlers, and Africans who were brought over during the colonial era.
This mix created an amazing, lively culture! The Spanish-speaking Caribbean is famous for giving the world incredible dances and music like Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata. The people are known for being warm, friendly, and very expressive. They love playing baseball, eating delicious plantains and beans, and celebrating with family. This region includes the beautiful countries of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the island of Puerto Rico.
