Look at a map of Africa, and on the right side, you'll see a piece of land that sticks out like a rhino's horn! This is the Horn of Africa. It has a very long and proud history. Thousands of years ago, it was home to the powerful Kingdom of Aksum. Uniquely, Ethiopia, a large country in the Horn, is the only African nation that successfully fought off European colonization, remaining independent and keeping its ancient traditions alive!
The people of the Horn of Africa are very proud of their heritage. They have unique languages with their own special alphabets, like the Ge'ez script. The food is also unique; they eat delicious stews with a special, spongy flatbread called Injera. The landscape is full of contrasts, from the cool, green Ethiopian Highlands to the hot, dry coastal plains. Today, the Horn of Africa includes countries like Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, and Djibouti.
