Southern Africa is known for its breathtaking landscapes and incredibly diverse people. Thousands of years ago, the indigenous San and Khoekhoe people lived here, followed by the great Kingdom of Zimbabwe which built massive stone cities. Later, European settlers from the Netherlands and Britain arrived and colonized the land. In South Africa, they created a very unfair system called apartheid, which separated people by race. But heroes like Nelson Mandela fought for justice, and today, the region is free and embraces equality.
The people of Southern Africa are a beautiful mix of many cultures and languages. In South Africa alone, there are 11 official languages! The region is famous for its vibrant music, beadwork, and strong sense of community called 'Ubuntu' - which means 'I am because we are'. Today, Southern Africa includes countries like South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. You can find everything here, from the roaring Victoria Falls to the dry Kalahari Desert and modern, busy cities.
