Sekou Toure and the Brave Choice

A long time ago in Guinea, there was a proud leader named Sekou Toure. He loved his country and the people in it. But Guinea was ruled by a faraway country that wanted to keep control forever. One day, the leader of that faraway country gave the people of Guinea a choice: they could stay under his rule and get lots of money, or they could choose to be completely free, but they would have to build everything themselves.

Sekou Toure stood tall and told his people, 'We prefer poverty in freedom to riches in slavery.' This meant that it is better to be free, even if things are hard, than to be comfortable but not free. The people agreed with him and cheered loudly! They chose freedom. It wasn't easy, and they had to work very hard together, but Sekou Toure showed them that their dignity and freedom were the most precious things they could ever have.
