Tiken Jah Fakoly, The Fearless Critic

Tiken Jah Fakoly is one of Africa's strongest contemporary voices against political corruption and neocolonialism. Born in Côte d'Ivoire, he grew up witnessing political instability and the struggles of everyday people. He embraced reggae to deliver hard-hitting messages directly to those in power. Tiken Jah is entirely fearless; he sings about rigged elections, the exploitation of African resources by foreign powers (which he calls 'Françafrique'), and the need for youth empowerment. Because his music 'Le Balayeur' (The Sweeper) became an anthem for protests against corrupt leaders, he faced death threats and was forced to live in exile in Mali for many years. Despite the danger, he has never softened his lyrics. In 'Plus Rien Ne M'Étonne', he calls out the greed that keeps the continent divided. Tiken Jah Fakoly remains a hero to African youth, continually urging them to demand democracy, unity, and a better future.
