Fela Kuti, The Founder of Afrobeat

Listen to this story

Fela Anikulapo Kuti was born in Nigeria to a family of activists. His mother was a famous feminist, and his father was a school principal. Fela went to London to study medicine but decided to study music instead. He combined traditional West African music, like highlife, with American jazz and funk to create a powerful new sound called Afrobeat. But Fela didn't just want people to dance; he wanted them to think. He sang in Pidgin English so everyone could understand his message. His songs, like "Zombie" and "International Thief Thief (ITT)," boldly criticized the military government, corruption, and the exploitation of African resources. Because of his fearless voice, he was arrested over 200 times, and his home, the Kalakuta Republic, was repeatedly attacked. Yet, Fela never backed down. He became a global symbol of resistance and African unity, proving that music can be a powerful weapon for justice.
