Thomas Mapfumo, known as 'The Lion of Zimbabwe,' was born in Marondera. Early in his career, he played covers of Western rock and soul. But as Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) plunged into a war for independence against white minority rule, Mapfumo realized his music needed to reflect the struggles of his people. He created a new genre called 'Chimurenga' (a Shona word meaning struggle or liberation). He adapted the sound of the traditional mbira (thumb piano) to modern electric guitars and sang in the Shona language. His music became the soundtrack of the revolution, inspiring freedom fighters and ordinary citizens alike. The colonial government felt so threatened that they imprisoned him. Even after Zimbabwe gained independence, Mapfumo did not stop singing for justice. When the new government became corrupt, he fearlessly criticized them in his songs, eventually forcing him into exile. Thomas Mapfumo's legacy is a reminder that a true artist always speaks truth to power.
