Queen Nzinga ruled the kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba in modern-day Angola. When foreign colonizers arrived to take her land, she met with their governor to negotiate peace. Trying to make her feel unimportant, the governor sat in a large chair and offered Nzinga a simple mat on the floor. But Nzinga was far too clever and proud! She signaled her servant, who got down on all fours to create a human throne. Nzinga sat down, looking the governor directly in the eye, proving she was his equal. She spent her life outsmarting the colonizers and personally leading her armies into battle, showing that true rulers command respect through cleverness and bravery.
