Elijah McCoy, The Real McCoy

Listen to this story

Born in Canada to parents who had escaped slavery, Elijah McCoy went to Scotland to study engineering. When he returned to North America, no one would hire him as an engineer because of the color of his skin, so he took a job shoveling coal into train engines. Elijah noticed that trains had to stop frequently to be oiled, which wasted time. Using his brilliant mind, he invented an automatic lubricating cup that oiled the engine while the train was moving! His invention was so good that train engineers started asking for 'the real McCoy' to make sure they were getting his high-quality device. He teaches us that even when people underestimate you, your brilliant ideas can change the world.
