Anansi's Cozy Silver Web

Listen to this story

Long ago, under the golden moon of West Africa, clever Anansi the spider sat in a tall baobab tree. Night was falling, and his friends—Little Bird, Soft Bunny, and Tiny Ant—were too restless to sleep. The night air was chilly, and the forest was very dark.

"Do not worry," whispered Anansi kindly. "I will share something special with you."

Anansi used his wonderful gift. Did you know that spiders spin silk from their bodies that is amazingly light yet stronger than steel thread? Anansi carefully wove the softest, silver silk threads between the sweet-smelling jasmine flowers. He didn't keep the cozy silk just for himself. Instead, he wove four gentle hammock blankets, one for each of his tired friends.

As he worked, Anansi shared a wise secret. "When we share our gifts with others," he murmured softly, "our hearts become warm, and our dreams become sweet."

Little Bird snuggled into her silver cradle. Soft Bunny curled up under a warm silk sheet. Tiny Ant felt safe and cozy on a soft leaf wrapped in thread.

The forest grew quiet. Stars twinkled like tiny lanterns in the quiet sky. Anansi climbed to his own comfortable nook at the top of the tree, feeling happy that his friends were warm and safe. He rested his eight tiny legs, closed his eyes, and drifted into a peaceful dream. Goodnight, clever Anansi. Goodnight, sweet forest.
